Hypnosis for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Unwanted Behaviours

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be described as unwanted obsessive thoughts or compulsive physical activities that are disrupting your quality of life. In most cases OCD’s root causes are emotional or developmental.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder steals your life. It can express differently in different people, but the underlying mechanism is the same.

OCD can be difficult to treat with traditional talk therapy or therapies like CBT (cognitive behavourial therapy) alone.  Hypnosis (hypnotherapy) is highly effective for treating OCD, because Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) has been shown to be the most effective treatment for OCD, and in hypnosis the exposure is imagined and done in a safe space with an experienced therapist.

In a state of deep hypnotic relaxation, your imagination becomes a powerful way to calm and take the sting out of the anxiety created by obsessive thoughts.
In a hypnotic or “trance” state, you can use your imagination to alter your experience and master your anxiety. For example, you can distance yourself from an object or situation that causes distress.

Combining the imagined exposure with relaxation has been shown to be very effective and can easily be done in trance.

Knowing Your Triggers Is Not Enough

Knowing why you do what you do (or even when you get triggered) isn’t enough to change the behaviour, as you may have experienced if you suffer from OCD. You already know you want the behaviour gone; you just can’t get to the part of your mind that can help it to stop.
This is because your obsessive urges and subsequent responses are deeply embedded in the subconscious mind that in some cases, the only viable way to get to it is with the help of a qualified clinical hypnotherapist.

How Hypnosis Helps with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Almost all clients who struggle with obsessive thinking and behaviour also have high levels of anxiety. The anxiety both causes and feeds the obsessive behaviour at the same time, this creates a vicious cycle.

Working with hypnotherapy and OCD, I help clients to examine their thinking in a safe space and bring obsessive urges into the light without judging them or becoming identified with them.

For example, a person’s inner conflicts can trigger obsessive symptoms, creating a cycle of anxiety reactions that perpetuate the OCD symptoms.

Often OCD co-occurs with anxiety and also depression or low moods, and exhaustion from inner conflicts.

If you’re looking for a safe and effective way to treat your Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, hypnosis (hypnotherapy) is an excellent tool to treat both the symptom and the cause of your behaviour so that you can take back control and enjoy a life without feeling imprisoned by your thoughts or behaviours.

Other Unwanted Behaviours, for example ticks, Tourette's Syndrome, speech impediments such as stuttering, or seemingly uncontrollable behaviors such as bed wetting also respond well to treatment by hypnotherapy.
